Blackbird (Turdus merula)
Even though they only sing from February to June, many consider the blackbird's song to be the equal of the nightingale's. The 18th century essayist Joseph Addison is reported to have said 'I value my garden more for being full of blackbirds than of cherries, and very frankly give them fruit for their songs'. Certainly blackbirds love fruit, and if you have fruit trees in your garden, this is definitely the way to look at it!
But it is not only fruit that they like. Rose hips are popular, and pyracantha berries, crab apples, cotoneaster, holly, honeysuckle, black briony, yew and ivy too. But mostly. you will see blackbirds feeding on the ground. They will pause while hopping across the lawn, head turned to one side, and you might think they are looking for food. Actually they are listening for worms. They must have remarkable hearing.
The hen bird is mostly left to make the bowl-shaped nest, which is made from dry grasses and dead leaves, reinforced with mud, and lined with finer grass. The preferred locations are thick bushes, ivy, walls and even houses. They are quite inquisitive - I had a female once come in through the patio doors and hop all around my lounge before leaving. (I don't think she was that impressed with my lounge, because she then proceeded to make her nest in my clematis.) There are usually three to five eggs, pale
turquoise and speckled, which hatch after about two weeks. The chicks stay for another two weeks before leaving, but remain dependent on mum and dad for food for another twenty days or so.
The male is black. Females and youngsters are brown, with paler, speckled breasts - they are sometimes mistaken for thrushes, but are darker. Young males' bills are black, but the adult male's bill is golden yellow. Around the eyes, also, he has a narrow band of yellow. Young males, following their first autumn moult, turn much darker, but are not fully black until the early spring.
While blackbirds were originally forest dwellers, they are now very common in parks and gardens. In fact, with about six million breeding pairs, they are one of the most commonly seen birds in Britain and Ireland. I often see them in my garden - sunbathing in summer with wings and tail fanned out. And there always seem to be a few with odd white feathers. Partial albinism is quite common amongst garden nesting blackbirds.
